About Gwasg y Gors

Gwasg Y Gors (The Bog Press) is a private press, established in 2013. Based in Taliesin in North Ceredigion, on the edge of Cors Fochno (Borth Bog - hence the name), we aim to specialise in publishing items of interest to local historians, as well as specialist items relating to Welsh history. Our list will include both new works as well as reprints of older works that are now out-of-print (but still interesting).

We also intend to publish a series of reprinted postcards of the area as it was a century or more ago.

We already have a number of projects underway, so are unable to accept submissions.

We publish books in both Welsh and English.

Aberystwyth Official Guide and Souvenir (1924)

This is a facsimile reprint of a guide book originally published by Aberystwyth Corporation in 1924. For anyone interested in the history of West wales, and Aberystwyth in particular, the most fascinating part of the book are the advertisements. Nearly half the book comprises adverts (often illustrated with photographs) from many of the shops, hotels and other businesses active in the town nearly a century ago. These open a fascinating window on the days when the Talbot Hotel (Telephone number '7') advertised a 'Ladies Drawing Room', The Lion Royal Hotel (Tel '8') had an omnibus that met all trains, and the Primrose Motor Co. offered daily trips in their 14-seater Charabanc De Luxe.

A perfect present for residents of Aberystwyth old and new.

Ivor Bowen - The Statutes of Wales (1908)

At a time when the Welsh devolution settlement has given prominence to the relationship between Wales and the Westminster parliament this facsimile reprint of Ivor Bowen’s classic The Statutes of Wales of 1908 brings to the fore a context and depth to that relationship. Bowen’s work reproduces the statutes and statutory provisions concerned specifically with Wales from Magna Carta to the beginning of the twentieth century. It is a book which retains a practical utility, but which also stands as a milestone in Welsh jurisprudence.

Bowen’s original text is reproduced here in full, together with a new preface by the legal historian Richard W. Ireland.

"I am Totally Ruined!"

Who benefited from investment in metal-mining in North Cardiganshire in the mid 19th Century? Nigel Callaghan
A few people made fortunes from the silver and lead mines of North Cardiganshire during the nineteenth century, but many more lost considerable sums investing in mines that failed, whether because they were the victims of fraud or were just rather over-optimistic. But thousands of others still benefited from the failed investments - the miners and their families, the landowners, the shop-keepers and the tradesmen who supplied the mines - and the lawyers! Through a detailed examination of the accounts of one small mine (Pwll Roman in the village of Taliesin) in the 1850s this book uncovers exactly who made a profit from the losses of the misguided investors.

Based on research for a thesis for the MA (Local History) course of the University of Wales Trinity Saint David, this book has been expanded to include numerous documents from the Pwll Roman company accounts at Ceredigion Archives, together with letters relating to the history of the Taliesin Mine.
